What has been happening with education is that for many years it has been stable.... Over the past several years there has been more ... intensive media coverage, more concern from political and religious groups, more demands from business, more special needs to accommodate and more impact from technology. All of these have perturbed the system. Thus, it is moving out of stability and into disequilibrium. (Caine & Caine, 1997, p. 59) As I prepared to teach my final graduate class before retiring, I wondered how to make this six-week-long summer class, "Seminar in Early Childhood Education," reflect "best teaching." How could I give these practicing teachers a sense that they could make changes in their thinking and therefore their practices, now and in the future, and see themselves more clearly as leaders of their schools and in their communities? Having recently attended a three-day conference on "Reflection as a Catalyst for Change in Gloucester," England, I reflected on what I experienced there and what I could share with these students, who were near the completion of their coursework and soon to receive their master's degrees in early childhood education (ECE). I decided to make the students' final assignment relevant, reflective, and "proflective." I just didn't know what shape this should take.
